Making custom Rubik's Cube stickers from cubesmith vinyl sheets

I recently needed to make some custom 3x3 Rubik's Cube stickers. I went through some trouble to make them, so I thought I would share my tips with all of you in Internet-land.

  1. Purchase your vinyl sheets from cubesmith.com

  2. Download this Photoshop template. It has the grid you need for easier cutting (for easy cutting out of sticker photos, put the photos on a layer BELOW the grid). The grid is sized for normal rubik's cubes stickers, but you can enlarge it to make bigger stickers which still won't go over the edge of the tile. When finished in Photoshop, export to Illustrator.

  3. Make a 10.5" x 6.5" canvas in Illustrator, put 6 copies of your grid on the canvas. You can easily fit the original grid + 5 copies onto the 10.5" x 6.5" canvas.

  4. Save as PDF/EPS/whatever.

  5. Laser printers sometimes melt the vinyl sheets. Furthermore, stickers sometimes come out blurry. Because of this, it's important to print *multiple copies* of each sticker per print job. This way if there's smudging you have duplicates to pick the best from without the risk of running your vinyl through the printer again. I have successfully printed on every vinyl sheet I've tried (including chrome), but be especially careful with the chrome ones--they melt very easily.
